How do you know if you need to call a tow truck?
You will need to call a tow truck if damage from the accident makes driving impossible. This will likely be obvious because your car simply won’t start, for example.
However, always take a moment to be sure your vehicle is roadworthy before you try to drive it. Never attempt to drive if you suspect that it may be unsafe to do so. It’s better to err on the side of caution even if your car appears drivable.
Don’t risk damaging your vehicle further, especially if the wheels are bent or obstructed by damaged parts. When in doubt, call a tow truck.
How do you choose a towing company?
Your insurance company can usually recommend a reputable towing company. ICBC, for instance, recommends asking the tow truck business if they are an ICBC supplier. If so, they are guaranteed to meet minimum requirements for licensing, insurance and storage facilities.
Alternatively, if the police are at the scene of the accident, they can suggest an ICBC approved towing company in the area.
What happens to your vehicle when it is towed away?
Firstly, the towing company will tow your car to a storage facility. Once your car has been securely stored, you should contact your insurance provider to report the accident.
An estimator will then examine your vehicle and give you an estimate for the necessary repairs. Finally, your vehicle will be transported to the body shop of your choice to be repaired.
